So I stumble upon this unique yellow phone box while walking around Johannis church. But the box is contained with lots of books. I wander around to ask everyone whether they know something about this.

Got the information from the “Altes Rathaus”. They said that after the yellow telephone box has more and more disappeared from the public street scene and the consciousness of many people in the past years, it now returns to Göttingen by November 2017 – but with different usage. Since Thursday 27 July 2017, a discarded telephone box, which has been converted into a mobile street library, makes the Johanniskirchhof a reading place.

The “Bücherboxx” is a free library exchange, which works according to the principle “Bring a book – take a book – read a book”. Books can be withdrawn or stored at any time without loan. Swapping and sharing is the focus, with a focus on reuse, longevity, economical use of resources and waste prevention. The unusual presentation of the mini-library is also produced in a sustainable way: a re-used telephone cell has been reused by re-using existing materials by up-cycling. The mobile library, which contains various booklets on the topic of sustainability as well as fiction and children’s books, is supported by the trainees of the second year of the Göttingen School of Education and urban climate protection managers.

The bookboxx will be presented at the conference “Netzwerk21Kongress” and is intended to draw attention to the annual climate protection days in Göttingen, which will take place this year together with a nationwide sustainability conference in the Lokhalle Göttingen. During the Climate Protection Days from 21 November to 1 December 2017, numerous actions and events, lectures, film meetings and excursions are planned, which offer the opportunity to get information on the range of sustainability and climate protection and the corresponding possibilities for action. On a Markt der Möglichkeiten (market of possibilities), different Göttingen groups present their offers and offer a varied program of electromobility to touch and try out over art activities up to participation in the topic “Up-cycling and waste”.

Information on climate protection in Göttingen can be found at www.klimaschutz.goettingen.de, further information on the conference can be found at www.netzwerk21kongress.de.
